Recycling and sustainable design feature in the work of Carolyn Butts and
Hans Honegger, co-creators of the Bon ECO Design Shop in Eastern Ontario.
Bon ECO’s designs are a response to the current world conditions of pollution, limited resources and dwindling energy supplies.
Hans Honegger grew up amongst resourceful adults who encouraged
repair over replacement and found treasures in the discards of others.
His training includes degrees in Environmental Studies, Architecture
and Restoration. Hans was Assistant Director of Heritage Canada’s Main Street Programme, which focused on the preservation of small town main
streets, the cultivation of a regional expression and the strengthening
of community. His design work continues to embody respect for material, resources and the energy invested by others.
Carolyn Butts was
fortunate to grow up in suburban Canada during the 60’s and 70’s having
exposure to art, music, theatre, travel and a loving home. Appreciation
for this western lifestyle and knowing that privilege comes with an
environmental price is a continuing source for Carolyn’s creativity.
The wasting of land and materials are a significant concern. Carolyn
began creating with tires in 1991 finding inspiration from the historic
tire fire in Hagersville, Ontario, Canada. Upwards of 14 million tires
burned uncontrollably for 17 days. Recognizing the issues
of tire disposal, Carolyn applied her knowledge of tools and materials
to her first set of changed tires. This endeavor has lead to the
sourcing of many other disrespected materials for reuse.
Jake Baer is the son of Carolyn. Jake grew up in a home filled with
tire art and design. Jake appreciates nature, mainly reptiles, and
understands how we need to protect the land and its inhabitants.
Jake makes belts
from bicycle tires and helps in the workshop.
