Carolyn
Butts started her work with tires as a creative resource
over 10 years ago. Her motivation to use them as a raw
material began as an effort to avoid contributing to the
tragic waste of dumping millions of tires into landfill
sites. Carolyn saw the aesthetic value of her old car
tires and started cutting them up, transforming them
into artistic tread tapestries and wall sconces. The
results confirmed her belief that beauty can be found in
the most unlikely and mundane of objects.
Inspired, motivated, and armed with her artistic and
design skills acquired through work at The Canadian
Museum of Civilization in Quebec, MGM Grand Hotel in Las
Vegas, a Hollywood film production in Arizona, numerous
corporate set designs and retail store interiors, Butts
returned to tires for creating innovative Furnishings
and home accessories.
With award-winning
RIMS- Recovery Inspired Mirrors
as her signature line, Carolyn has her sights set on
practical and artistic products made from discarded
material. "There is still use and beauty left in much of
the common goods we throw away" says Carolyn. |
